Every year, around March, we see a procession of these little ones behind their mothers. The largest group behind a single hen had a clutch of twelve chicks. Eagles, Vultures and Hawks often prey on the newly hatched so to protect them a mother often carries them on her back when swimming in the water. As they grow, fewer and fewer of them can get on her back at one time, their combined weight often overloading a poor mother. As she sinks lower and lower into the water she will tell them off by either flapping her wings or simply diving for a short time under water, upending the lot of them. However, the second she settles down or pops back up they crowd around to try again.
